Project Sign off

 Project Sign off

This is my project sign off that I signed with my tutor. I had about 30 minutes discussion about the project. I discussed main ideas and asked about the details of my project. Firstly I think about my project in another way because I had too many ideas in my head and my tutor guide me to became more specific. Also we have discussed about another idea that I can do an interview with a member of my family and ask about region culture and traditions. In my opinion that will bring more value to my project and truth. What I think now it is after the discussion my project became consistent and also I got the right direction I should work on my project.

Major Project Plan

Major Project Plan

From this week to the end of my term I will be working on my Major Media Project. Today I will think about what kind of project can I create about my progression route and my interests. I think about content writing. According to the Content Marketing Institute, "content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain clearly defined audience, and ultimately, to drive profitable customer action"(Content Marketing Institute (2021). I think this is a good direction, because during my course I will learn how to write and use the correct English language, and that will help me in the future to be a good content writer. My idea is to write an article about the Silesian region in Poland from where I am from, however there we can find traditional, delicious food. I will do the brainstorm about the main ideas for the project and also this is my planning post. I created the plan using the Visme website.

Project Plan Page 1

Project Plan Page 2

Also I will add a short interview with my dad to my project. We will talk about Silesian Food and try to answer the question what is his favorite traditional dish.

My Advertisement Project

Here is the final outcome of my own advertisement.

In my opinion my work on advertisement project ran quite smoothly, I used high quality software to create my advert. In general I am happy of outcome. I think  the use of colors is good, I have some negative space around the bottle. I believe that the background and use of fonts and colors creates impression of sophistication. What I should do for the next time is to think more deeply about the slogan and try to find something more catching attention. If I want to create my own perfume in real I would produce my own bottle which would be designed exactly how I want.

My Advertisement plan

 My advertisement plan

Today's task lesson was to do the brainstorm and plan our own advert. After my initial research I decided to do perfume advertisement. Here is the picture of the concept of my own perfume brand. I used Canva digital software to create my Mind map.

                                                                  Canvas Mind map 1

When I think about the rose I image its pleasant smell and also delicate and beautiful look. For me that flower is unique.

                                                                    Canvas Mind map 2

My perfume brand name will be Rose. My logo will be rose flower created in Canva Logo software in pink color. My product needs to have simple and clear logo that creates impression of expensive and sophisticated product. The bottle will be transparent and simple.

                                                                        Types of fonts

I am going to use Serif font - Hatton, because my product will be elegant and I would like to bet on the classics. Serif fonts has tiny flourishes and that makes it look elegant. I was inspired by logo from well known brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Zara. That is an photo example:

Following Tailorbrands.com in addition to displaying a sense of tradition and respectability, logos with Serif fonts are popular with companies that wish to project an air of sophistication and elegance.
Also I will add an additional information to my advert such as " Introducing the new fragrance 2022" or "The new fragrance Rose by Iwona". I will put the image of finished project to my advert. What I learned from my initial research is that my advert background should be simple and clear with a lot of negative space. That will make my product looks unique. Also I should not put too many details to my advert such as another pictures and a lot of description. To create my advert I will be using software called Pixlr. Here I added screenshot from the process:

First I open new file and choose first layer to be my chosen background

                                                                               Pixlr Screenshot 1

Later I add the title and slogan using left menu bar

Pixlr Screenshot 2

After that I put the image of my product in the centre

Pixlr Screenshot 3

At the end I add logo

Pixlr Screenshot 4

My reflection of creating my own perfume advert is that I'm quite happy for the result. I think I targeted good my advertisement audience and also I created something unique. I can say that advert is very personal because my third name is Rose. Also I like sort of pastel and delicate colors like powder pink and purple and I could use them in my advert.  I'm happy with the background, my slogan and additional information. What I would do differently for the next time is to find or create lighter version of perfume bottle and also with shape of the rose. Also I think the software I used it was a little bit challenging to use it, because I worked with layers and I find it very professional. I would like to gain more skills in this software in the future.

In todays lesson we had an introduction to advertisement. Advertisement in simple words is anything that draws good attention towards these things. It is usually designed by an advertising agency for a sponsor or brand and made public by various media. According to the Cambridge dictionary the definition of advertising is "the activity of making products or services known about and persuading people to buy them" (Cambridge University Press, 2021). In another words advertising is a means of communication with the users of a product or service. Adverts appears on media such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, billboards in streets and cities. We can find a lot examples of advertising. Here are two examples of old and in my opinion beautiful designed adverts that I found interesting:

The ideal brain tonic (with Hilda Clark) 1890s

Drink Coca - Cola thru a straw from a bottle - Coke Vintage Soda Pop Metal Sign

Cures Headache, Relieves Exhaustion (with Hilda Clark 1890s)

This an example of modern advertising that I consider artwork and and full of quality and creativity one:

ZARA WOMAN / Spring Summer 2021 Campaign

Now I can have an idea how the advert is constructed and also what kind of features should have. For example I can see the brand name, slogan and narrative story. Now I will do the brainstorm and think about my own advert. I'm sure it have to be something unique and sophisticated.

Duane Michals - photographer

Duane Michals

                                               Duane Michals - self portrait

Duane Michals - "Who is Sydney Sherman"

Let me introduce you to a fantastic photographer who motivates me to create my own images. Duane Michals, born in 1932, is a well-known American photographer known for his narrative sequential images. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a narrative is a story or a description of a series, as well as a specific way of explaining or understanding events. What I found intriguing is that he creates images in the style of a film. What we can see is that he frequently marks photos in poetry writing and observations about his topic. The work of artist such as Rene Magritte and Balthus inspired Duane Michals to address literary and philosophical ideas about gender, death, and sexuality. He usually set up scenes for photographs.

                                            Duane Michals at his 40.

In 1999 Michals was asked to take a photo for a prestigious Vogue on quantum physics. His photo relates to Werner Heisenberg who said that you cannot predict with certainty the position or velocity a particle - they interact in chaos. The concept that the essential expression of energy is something disorganized pulled the carpet from under a lot of thinking. Michals decided to purchase a convex mirror and illustrate the Haisenberg uncertainty principle. As he said on interview he thought to illustrate with the mirror which transforms everything in front of it.

Dr                                  Heisenberg's Magic Mirror of Uncertainty, 1998

Duane Michals is the narrator. As he said photography should not be documentary. Their topic is the human condition and his sequential images called Paradise Regained are not exception. Paradise Regained it tells a story but there we can see more than a story. Its subjects is a couple in a sterile office environment whose reality is slowly transformed by plants as they normality fuse piece by piece. By the final image the couple are not longer alone. They pose by plenty of houseplants and let loose in wild botanical universality.

                                   Duane Michals, Paradise Regained,1968

In 2008 he celebrated his 50 years anniversary working as a photographer. He currently live in New York city. He is still doing photos and take current part in international exhibitions. Why did I choose this photographer to tell about his work? I believe that Duane Michals as a photographer stands out from others, it allows us to see unknown respects of reality. His works are full of narratives. I can draw inspiration from them and learn a lot. Especially I like photo descriptions because I like poetry. I believe that this photos show wonderfully the curiosity and creativity that me as a student would like to develop.

Star and Squirrel Story

Here is final outcome of my sequential story images.

                                                              STAR AND THE SQUIRREL

Making photos in the park was an exciting experience for me. I love being outside and feel the nature. In my opinion my photos are quite good, full of green and a little bit of orange color. I believe what I wanted to show it is included on them. I learned that while being outside I should be always prepared to take photos especially If something will appear suddenly. What can I improve? For the next time I can use better quality camera and use software filters to make my images look better. Here is the process I put my images in order using Canva software:

First I choose the layout of my collage

                                                       Screenshot 1 - Layout

Secondly I upload my photos and put them in order to make collage

                                                  Screenshot 2 - Collage

                                                           Screenshot 3 - Uploading images

After I complete my collage I added green background

                                                               Screenshot 4 - Background

I'm quite happy with my final outcome, however I think I should work for better quality of my images.

Sequential Images - A story

 Sequential Images - A story

My main idea for the second post about Sequential Images was to plan and create the story.
I did research about story-telling photographers and I found interesting images of Duane Michals.

Duane Michals began making sequences of narrative pictures in the late 1960s, imagining metaphysical topics like memory, desire, and mortality. In the opening to his 1976 book, Real Dreams, he remarked, "I believe in the imagination." "It's immensely more essential what I can't see than what I can." Michals uses double exposure to conjure a ghostly apparition in The Spirit Leaves the Body, resurrecting the ethereal iconography of nineteenth-century spirit photography in a new lyrical setting.

Those images, in my opinion, represents the relationship between something seen and something unseen. It is mysterious. In response to Michals' art, I went to the park to find my own inspiration. I think observing nature often shows us something that is not visible at first glance, in particular small animals and plants. I was not surprised this time either.

Contact sheet

I took photos with my Samsung Smartphone using automatic setting. First, in my photos, we can see a star seen from a distance, but when we get closer, we see a squirrel that was previously invisible. If I put few photos in order I can see the story about invisible squirrel. I'm happy that I was able to take more than twenty pictures. What I would do differently for the next time is to take better quality camera for example Canon Camera and wait for a sunny day to make better quality images.

My blog buddy

 My blog buddy

Let me introduce you to fantastic blog of my university buddy - "The labyrinth of creativity". His name is Christopher and he is passionate about film production. He inspires to be a well know film maker. I find his blog very interesting as he has another field of studies. What I like about his blog is that he added creative drawings made by himself. In my opinion sort of layout he is using well reflects the directions of his studies. This is a red curtain. I can't wait for his own website! Here is the link you can find his blog. Enjoy!

Sequential Images

Sequential Images

Eadweard James Muybridge by Richard Taylor (1889)

To create my first project in Sequential Images I did research about well-known sequential photographers. I was most interested in Eadweard Muybridge born in 1830, who was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. his original name was Edwar James Muggeridge His name is the original Anglo-Saxon form of Edward which I find very interesting regards to my study program which is the English language. With his camera, Muybridge revealed a new universe of motion, but history has largely obscured his extraordinary achievements in the area of photography.
Edward James Muggeridge, alias Edweard Muybridgewas an English photographer who pioneered motion-picture projections and photographic studies of motion in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. His original name was Edward James Muggeridge, born April 9, 1830, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England.
The first people who put pictures on stone drew horses, deer, and buffalos and they painted them running.

In reference to The Atlantic article, invisible life existed in the motion of the horse, something that we cannot see. Until the year the 1870s at the moment a man founded Stanford University and hired the photographer - Eadweard Muybridge.

Eadweard Muybridge - "the man who captured time"

The galloping horse was the Muybridge the best creation. In this picture, we can see a man riding a horse. That picture creates a sensation of movement.

Here we have a set of images that present a woman and her movements.

Here we can see sequential images that show us athlete lifting ball.

Animal Locomotion (1887)

In reference to the creativity of one of the best-known motion images of photographer Eadweard Muybridge I went out the campus and I shoot six photos using an automatic setting that shows us the movement of objects, in this case - car.

I took my photos using a 12 MP camera Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone with phase-detection autofocus.

WHITE CAR

As we can see the white car is moving forward when driving on the street until it finally disappears.
I wanted to show the movements of objects and I think that photos are a good example of motion.
For my collage I work with graphic program called Canva. In my opinion this program is very simple and convenient to use for beginners. We can find there many examples of creative collages. I found it very useful. Here we can se the process of creating collage in Canva program:

First I opened digital software Canva on website:

        Screenshot of Canva 1

Secondly I uploaded my images to Canva using left menu bar and click on'uploads'

Screenshot of Canva 2

I opened simple collage and put my images in order

Screenshot of Canva 3

Screenshot of Canva 4

Finally I added all pictures and change the filter on it

Screenshot of Canva 5

I think for the first time shooting sequential photos is not too bad, that was a very exciting experience. I think I should work on finding more interesting ideas and go deeper into the world around us. Also for the next time I would do more images and fulfill my Contact sheet.

Introducion to sequential images

                                                Sequential images - introduction

In todays lesson we have discussed about sequential images. Those are images that follow each other in logical order. In photography than can be used to show motion, movement, action, or narrative.

Here I show some examples of modern sequential images, one of them are storyboards which I found interesting. The idea of storyboarding originated in the entertainment industry.

A still for animated ring tone about the perils of being the hand while playing ball for Panasonic Mobile, Japan.

A still for animated ring tone sequence about a mysterious group of playful ghosts for Panasonic Mobile, Japan.

A storyboard is a visual communication tool that is used to pre-visualize projects in a variety of contexts, including business (group brainstorming), advertising agencies (campaign planning), animation, motion graphics, interactive media, websites (such as sitemaps, navigation links), product design, film, and theatrical productions. The use of storyboards may be traced back to animator Webb Smith's work at the Walt Disney studio in the 1930s, when films like Steamboat Willie were being developed (1928). In the advertising industry, the storyboard artist is known as a visualizer and works as a freelancer for art directors. Storyboards are frequently used to present ideas in a clear and concise manner.

Here I found example of a storyboard when creating an application:

                                         Creating application storyboard (Meyer, 2016)

The goal of this storyboard is to show each screen in the app or website. We don't need to include details. Just show the main actions on each page. Also we can add a not which screen each button or links takes you to. Also numerically represent each image and write a note text to each button on link.

Here I show you another example of sequential images - in this case food:

sequence showing pink donut being consumed; concept; isolated on white ground  (Shutterstock)

This image shows us the 'process' of eating donut, while we don't see any person

In my opinion sequential images like storyboards will be useful during my course of Media, especially when I will be creating the video. I can use them for creating sketch of my future project.

Final Thoughts

As my last semester comes to a close, I would like to share my thoughts. The two main things I worked on were an essay and a media project. ...
